The paper then explores the behavior patterns of Asian clientsresident or transientand shows that visiting a prostitute is a normal and almost ritualistic activity. Neither age nor socio-economic background is a special criterion, since any man is a potential customer for commercial sex. It appears that it is impossible to establish a profile of a typical client. The frequency of his visits to a prostitute puts him in one of two categories: an occasional or a regular client. Within these two categories, the author analyses the clients motivations, and through this analysis emerges a portrait of a typical sex consumer. Due to the probable increase of prostitution in Asia, there is a need for both quantitative and qualitative studies; otherwise, it is quite likely that the clients, whether natives or sex tourists from around the world, will continue to make up one huge, anonymous and undefined mass.
